Poison Ivy can be identified by its 3 leaves with the middle leaf longer than the other two, and a reddish color where the leaf stems meet at the base.  the leaves are typically smooth or slightly notched and the brand new tiny leaves have an oily and sometimes reddish color.

Andrew and his crew are great to work with. They showed up when they said they would, were very courteous and went over all work to be done before proceeding. Two large trees needed pruning and the crew worked meticulously selecting the branches to be cut. They were considerate of the neighbors and cleaned up all debris before leaving. They did great work at a reasonable price. I highly recommend them as arborists.

The poison ivy vine can climb a tall tree and has thousands of visible threads that stick into the tree host.   the vast majority of poeple are allergic to poison ivy.  It causes an itchy and unsightly rash that spreads and lasts for a week or more.

For anyone who has accidentally come into contact with poison ivy, it is recommended that all clothing and shoes that were worn on the day of the exposure be washed with detergent and any car seats or door handles that were come into contact be wiped down with a soapy solution.  The best remedy for poison ivy is prevention.  The next remedy is eradication.

Eradication is done by mechanical or chemical means.  Mechanical by cutting the vine at the base of the tree, without damaging the tree bark.

Chemical eradication is accomplished either with roundup  (glyphosate) or an organic-oriented solution of  1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (reduced by boiling with tablespoon of seasalt) and then cooling it and adding a tablespoon of dawn dishwashing detergent.  

This organic option and the roundup option are both best applied to the leaves in the evening, when the chances of evaporation are less.  The solution should sit on the leaves for an hour or more, so that it can be taken in by the plant
