How to Care for Mature Trees: Expert Advice for 2024

Mature trees are a valuable asset to any landscape, providing shade, beauty, and numerous environmental benefits. However, caring for these majestic plants requires a specific set of knowledge and techniques. In this blog post, we’ll share expert advice on how to care for mature trees, ensuring they remain healthy and vibrant for years to come.

How to Care for Mature Trees: Essential Steps

When it comes to learning how to care for mature trees, there are several key steps to follow:

  1. Watering: Mature trees require deep, infrequent watering to promote deep root growth. Water your trees slowly and thoroughly, allowing the water to penetrate deep into the soil. The Arbor Day Foundation provides helpful guidelines on properly watering mature trees.
  2. Mulching: Apply a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of your mature trees, extending to the drip line. Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Be sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent decay.
  3. Pruning: Regular pruning is essential for maintaining the structure and health of mature trees. Remove dead, diseased, or damaged branches, as well as those that cross or rub against each other. Always use proper pruning techniques and tools to avoid damaging the tree. Consider hiring a professional arborist, like those at Troutbrook Arborists & Landscaping, for larger pruning jobs.
  4. Fertilization: Mature trees benefit from periodic fertilization to replenish nutrients in the soil. Use a slow-release, balanced fertilizer specifically designed for trees, and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive growth and weakened branches.
  5. Pest and Disease Management: Regularly inspect your mature trees for signs of pests or disease, such as discolored leaves, sticky residue, or unusual growths. If you suspect a problem, consult with a professional arborist or refer to resources like the International Society of Arboriculture for help with identification and treatment options.

How to Care for Mature Trees During Landscaping Projects

When undertaking landscaping projects or construction near mature trees, it’s crucial to take extra precautions to protect these valuable assets. Here are some tips on how to care for mature trees during such projects:

  • Establish a clear protection zone around the tree, extending at least to the drip line, and avoid any digging, soil disturbance, or heavy equipment operation within this area.
  • If excavation is necessary near a mature tree, consider using an air spade to minimize damage to the roots. This tool uses compressed air to gently remove soil and expose roots without causing harm.
  • Avoid piling soil, construction materials, or debris around the base of the tree, as this can suffocate the roots and lead to decline.
  • If you must prune or remove branches to accommodate construction, always use proper techniques and consult with a professional arborist to minimize stress on the tree.
